In preparation for the Olympic games in Sochi on Friday, Russian officials have been scrambling to make the town a welcome site for the 200,000 people expected to arrive. Incredibly, part of their policy to make the resort habitable for humans has been to round up and kill hundreds of stray dogs . In response to the lethal campaign that has been in effect since October, billionaire Olga Melnikova is spearheading an effort to save the animals. Nearly 3,000 people signed an online petition this week to protest the Port Authority of NY and NJ’s orders to kill snowy owls on sight at John F. Kennedy airport in New York City. The Port Authority made the decision as a safety precaution after a nesting owl was sucked into the engine of a plane, but animal lovers found the measures extreme. The airport is now considering other options such as trapping the birds in a humane way.
