Comments Off on Melissa McCarthy is hilarious as a luckless eco-warrior in Kia’s Superbowl ad
When she isn’t lampooning White House press secretary Sean Spicer on Saturday Night Live , Melissa McCarthy is off saving the planet—or at least trying to. In a 60-second spot that aired during the Super Bowl on Sunday, the actress is at the height of her physical-comedy prowess as her eco-hero character gamely zips around in her Kia Niro to rally for the whales, tthe rhinos, and the icecaps, often to hapless—and hysterical—effect. McCarthy’s watercraft is capsized by a breaching whale. A lumberjack sends a tree she has climbed crashing down. In another scene, McCarthy triumphantly stakes a “Save the Icecaps” sign through the ice, creating a fissure that she tumbles into with an ear-splitting scream. McCarthy may not be the hero we deserve, but in these trying political times, she’s precisely the kind we need. Via EW

Comments Off on What Donald Trump’s "Brder Wll" would look like if IKEA made it
Germany’s version of The Onion knows that President Donald Trump’s plan to wall off America’s southern border isn’t just a contentious proposition, it’s an expensive one, too. An “impenetrable, physical, tall, powerful, beautiful, southern border wall” that runs some 1,000 miles between the United States and Mexico would cost taxpayers anywhere between $12 million to $15 million, minus labor and maintenance costs. Research firm Bernstein estimated a price tag of $15 billion to $25 billion, while the number crunchers at MIT placed that figure closer to $40 billion. What’s a fiscally cinched nation to do? It clears the roof rack of its Toyota Camry and sets a course for the land of plywood, Allen wrenches, and köttbullar. In other words, it heads to IKEA . At $9 billion, the Börder Wåll, in all its presumably flat-pack glory, is a comparative steal. A satirical concept by Germany’s The Postillion , the faux product comprises 471,612 pressboard panels, 313,329 coils of barbed wire, 3,772,896 screws, and a single Allen key to pull everything together. Also included is a 12,000 page instruction manual with “easy-to-understand pictures makes construction child’s play—as long as there is not a single screw missing.” The basic Wåll is 33 feet tall and 1,954 miles long, according to The Postillion, although the “height and length can be extended as desired.” Related: Mexican designers envision Trump’s border wall in “all of its gorgeous perversity” Assembly, the site adds, requires two people: one to hold the panels and the other to screw them together. Since Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell and House Speaker Paul Ryan are pro-wall, we suggest starting with them. This isn’t the first time people have openly mocked Trump’s proposed wall. Mexican design studio Estudio 3.14 rendered the barrier in hot pink to underscore the “gorgeous perversity” of the idea. In July, an L.A.-based street artist by the name of Plastic Jesus erected a very wee wall —complete with barbed wire, warning signs, and a tiny American flag—around Trump’s star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. “In the U.S. you’ll interact with immigrants from all over the world and it’s one of the things that makes the U.S. so great,” the artist, who originally hailed from the United Kingdom, told BBC News last year. “Donald Trump’s policy proposals are a threat to all of the immigrants.” + The Postillion Via Cnet

Comments Off on Man drives truck through crowd of protestors at the Dakota Access pipeline protest
On Monday, a man in a white pickup truck drove through a group of protestors in Reno, Nevada, critically injuring one 59-year-old woman and leaving four others with minor injuries. The group had gathered in protest of Columbus Day and the advancing construction of the Dakota Access pipeline. Several observers caught the incident on video and the Reno Police report an investigation is underway. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iX0Qvk7YbnU&feature=youtu.be The group of 40 protestors had gathered underneath the Reno Arch to take a photo on Monday evening when they were approached by the truck. Exchanges can be heard between the protestors and the driver, instructing him to “just go around” the group. Instead, the driver revs his engine and drives through the group, leaving several injured. One woman, named Kitty Colbert, is currently at the Renown Regional Medical Center, which described her condition as “serious.” Despite her injuries, she has posted to social media that she is “in good spirits.” Related: Actress Shailene Woodley arrested at a Dakota Access Pipeline protest After the driver drove through the crowd, he reportedly pulled down another street and called to inform the police of what happened, according to the Reno Gazette-Journal . The names of the driver and his passenger have not been released, but they have been identified as 18 and 17 years old, respectively. Quanah Brightman, executive director of United Native Americans Inc. , says the young man was “stalking” the group and asks that they be charged with a hate crime for targeting their group. So far, the police report both men are cooperating with the investigation and there is no mention of charges at this time. Yesterday, Reno Mayor Hillary Schieve issued a statement on behalf of the Reno City Council: “Public safety is our highest priority, and I want all Reno residents to know that we are working swiftly and diligently to make sense of the events that took place last night. Please be advised that the Reno Police Department will hold anyone responsible accountable for their actions once the investigation has concluded.” Via Grist , Reno Gazette-Journal Images via YouTube (screenshot)
