Plexus Images credit Pylon Design Competition There are 88,000 power pylons in the UK, and the design of them has barely changed in 90 years. The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) and the Department of Energy and Climate Change have been holding a competition for architects, engineers and students ” to rethink one of the most crucial but controversial features of modern Britain: the electricity pylon.”- Something we might want to consider on this side of the ocean; a smart grid deserves smart towers. The short list of six was announced this morning; vote for your favourite! 1. PLEXUS by

This past weekend’s 100 degree heat wave in NY may have broken for now, but chances are that another “Heatpocalypse” is coming. As the weather heats up, our utility grids go into overdrive, trying to accommodate the spike in air conditioner usage, and the need for a smart grid (which we’ve been talking about forever) is even more apparent. Read on to see why it’s even more imperative than ever that we begin implementing the infrastructure for a smart grid now before temperatures rise even more. Photo via Marcin Wichary Google’s PowerMeter tool is taking a bite out of the slow progress we’re making toward a smart grid by jumping over utilities that move at the speed-of-molasses and putting energy data in front of users right away, including creating an easy-to-use energy monitoring platform and partnering with home power monitor companies like The Energy Detective. They’ve just made another smart move to speed things along by opening up their application programming interface (API) so that developers can start creating tools to interface with PowerMeter. Now developers..
