The race to bring ultrafast rail transport to America is heating up. A few years back, Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk dreamed up the hyperloop concept , a high-speed transportation system that uses low pressure tubes to propel capsules full of passengers an average speed of 600 miles per hour. One company, Hyperloop Transportation Technologies (HTT), is leading the charge to bring the concept to life with a test track under construction in California. Meanwhile, a confusingly similarly named but wholly unrelated company called Hyperloop Technologies has been quietly raising funds to build its own track in Nevada, and the competition is getting stiffer by the day . The Hyperloop track proposed to offer super-speed travel between San Francisco and Los Angeles has to be one of the most exciting projects slated for the coming decade. In concept, the ultra-high-speed tram seems like luxury sent straight from the future, but Elon Musk’s futuristic pipe dream could be free for commuters. Hyperloop Transportation Technologies CEO Dirk Ahlborn told CNBC that he’s kicking around the idea of making it free to ride , with paid upgrades bringing in the bulk of the profits. In an age when prices seem to rise endlessly, that’s a pretty refreshing notion. Likely Republican presidential candidate Jeb Bush is meeting with coal bigwigs this week in a closed forum where he will deliver the keynote speech and meet with potential donors. The Coal & Investment Leadership Forum in Bristol, Virginia is off-limits to the press, but the invite-only, $7,500-per-ticket event gathers key figures in the fossil-fuel industry and grants them intimate access to the presidential hopeful. Started on Sunday and continuing through Tuesday, the Forum comes at a key moment for both Bush, who hopes to break through in a historically crowded Republican primary , and the coal industry, which is facing its biggest challenge yet from the Obama Administration. China is creating a new high-speed train route that is so blazing fast it can take people 11,000 miles from Shanghai to Guangzhou in just 7 hours. That’s like travelling from Los Angeles to Seattle in just 7 hours. China also opened a high-speed rail in 2012 between Beijing and Guangzhou that covers 1,400 miles in 8 hours. It sounds like an April Fool’s joke, but from what we can tell, the Chinese government is completely serious about their latest high speed rail project. According to multiple news outlets, China plans to build an 8,000+ mile railroad (sounds plausible) connecting China, Russia, Canada, and the U.S. that includes a 125 mile undersea tunnel spanning the Bering Strait! The plan was announced in China’s state-run newspaper, the Beijing Times , and apparently Russia is already on-board with the plan. While it would be nice to travel from China to America in two days without setting foot in a single airport, engineers around the globe are skeptical.
