Kalahari Desert photo from Shutterstock Botswana government officials are in hot water over fracking in the Central Kalahari Game Reserve , which is the second largest wildlife preserve in the world. The fracking may have been going on for over a decade without public knowledge – until the Open Society Initiative for Southern Africa ’s film “ The High Cost of Cheap Gas ” exposed footage of fracking equipment on the land. Locals are enraged as the fragile Kalahari ecosystem is at risk from coal bed methane pollution due to fracking. A++ has designed a new set of 50 Sustainable Modular Lightweigth (SML) houses for a project located in the city of Melaka in the south-west of Malaysia. The project maintains a light ecological footprint by employing a variety of green building strategies and systems – including an on-site river filtrating system. The homes are also designed to mitigate the region’s strong rain and intense sun with roof-mounted solar photovoltaic systems and hydroelectric generators. Bamboo facing is used on the front facades of the homes in order to provide natural ventilation, and the structures are made of Profil Haus steel for quick assembly. Natural fibers are used for thermal and acoustic insulation. The result is a residential complex that is sustainable both economically and socially. The project is in its development stage and has already gained international recognition and awards. + A++ The article above was submitted to us by an Inhabitat reader. The sculptural form of this LA treehouse is a perfect fit for its occupants as the design was inspired by the owner’s art collection. Given as a surprise gift from a husband to his wife, the space is a mere 170 square feet. Rockefeller Partner Architects designed the project to avoid disrupting the flow of the backyard by placing the tree house twelve feet up, gingerly straddling a lone mature tree.
