French company Le FabShop has come up with a great way to make fruit and vegetables fun for kids. They have just released 14 3D-printable components that transform potatoes, carrots, eggplants and apples into planes, four-wheelers, helicopters and submarines. These accessories, called Open Toys, are open source and can be downloaded for free, then printed and attached to your kid’s favorite  – or not so favorite — fruit and veggies. 3d printing is commonly viewed as an expensive emerging technology – however a new study  by Michigan Technological University (MTU) shows that purchasing a 3d printer may actually make sound financial sense. The study found that a savings of up to $2,000 a year can be made by printing small everyday household objects instead of purchasing them from stores. IKEA’s upcoming 2014 catalog, which will be released on August 25, will allow you to preview products in your home using augmented reality to ensure that your purchase is the perfect size, style, and color for your interior . IKEA’s iOS and Android applications will let you preview over 90 products, and the catalog will feature 50 pages that can be scanned for additional information. The Department of Energy’s  Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E) just announced that it is spending up to $30 million on a new program that will develop a cost-effective way to harness solar energy even when the sun is not shining. The project will “engage our country’s top scientists, engineers, and entrepreneurs to develop new technologies”  and “help advance solar energy beyond current photovoltaic (PV) and concentrated solar power (CSP) technologies to ensure solar power remains a consistent, cost-effective renewable energy option,” according to the agency.
