Scientists Cautioned for Years About Threat to NYC from Large Hurricanes

With significant areas of New York City still underwater, many without power, hospitals evacuated and a public transit system that may take weeks to recover —New Yorkers have certainly learned the devastating impact that hurricanes can have on the iconic city. Scientists have been warning of such dangers for over a decade, but as Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo explained in a recent radio interview “The construction of this city did not anticipate these kinds of situations. We are only a few feet above sea level.” And with several studies citing sea level rise as a source of even greater threats to NYC, the question now is now can the city adapt and better prepare for such storms.
