Photo via Shutterstock In a bold and historic move, India has become the first South Asian nation to ban all animal testing for cosmetics . On Friday the Drug Controller General announced the ban, adding that the use of modern, non-animal tests for cosmetics and their ingredients will now be mandatory. Similar laws are already in place in the European Union and Israel, and the much needed change in India’s law comes after extensive campaigning by the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals , Humane Society International , and multinational retailers such as LUSH and The Body Shop . Kermit the frog was wrong—it is easy being green. These days being green is a big deal. Our society has been wasteful and environmentally irresponsible for a long time. Realizing that the earth doesn’t have an infinite amount of resources has forced people to take another look at the way they consume products. We recycle our garbage so it only makes sense to recycle our belongings, too. To this end “green” furniture , whether pieces that have been reused, passed down or made from replenish-able resources has gained popularity, not only for its intriguing character and sturdy construction, but also for its responsibility in reusing or not using natural resources. If you’re on the hunt for green furniture, click ahead for five handy tips that will help you on your search. SunStash is a newly launched Kickstarter project that seeks to provide an innovative solar powered solution to frequent interruptions in the power grid. Created by Don Cayelli, SunStash combines a powerful solar panel, a uniquely designed carrying case (which doubles as a stand) and a very high capacity lithium polymer power pack. Users can take the system anywhere, set it up easily, point the solar panel towards the sun and let the internal power pack stash away energy. “After Hurricane Sandy , I saw lots of footage on TV of people crowding around power outlets at local coffee shops and thought there had to be a better way”, explains Don Cayelli. “SunStash’s power pack can readily solve that problem by recharging 6 smartphones (or more) on a single charge and can be easily recharged in less than a day with its solar panel.” + Sunstash The article above was submitted to us by an Inhabitat reader. An amazing floating pool is being planned for NYC’s East River, but it needs your help . Called the + Pool because of its plus-shaped design, the waterbody already has the backing of many New York officials but it needs extra financing to complete a test model this summer. In exchange for contributions to its Kickstarter campaign, + Pool is offering personalized tiles to be permanently placed on the walls of the pool when it’s complete as well as the chance to be one of the first New Yorkers to take a dip !
