Concrete photo from Shutterstock Sooner or later, even the best sidewalk in the country will develop a crack or two. When this happens, workers are deployed to either fill in the damage or lay down completely new swaths of concrete. Over 7 per cent of the world’s CO2 emissions come from cement production , so any means of prolonging the material’s life would help to reduce greenhouse gasses. Researchers at Cardiff University , the University of Cambridge , and the University of Bath are taking part in a £3m project to create self-healing concrete . The material would be able to mend itself with the help of bacteria contained within microcapsules that would germinate and produce limestone when water enters a fissure. You might think that mushroom houses only existed in Smurfland, but a real-life ‘shroom shack is being grown right now in Green Island, NY. To be fair, the Mushroom Tiny House won’t be made completely of fungi (a wooden frame supports the structure) but the insulation and ceiling tiles will all use Ecovative’s unique mycelium technology. Since public urination seems to be a widespread problem at Carnival in Rio de Janeiro, two organizations have banded together to turn that pee into power . The Electric Pee project, by AfroReggae and JWT Brazil, will place urinals around the city for festival goers to use. As the pee flows into the receptacles, it is converted into energy that is then stored in a battery, which powers AfroReggae’s Carnival truck.
